Analytical computation of arc menisci configuration under primary drainage in convex capillary cross sections

چکیده
We analyze the geometric set-up of Lindquist’s “The Geometry of Primary Drainage” (J Colloid Interface Sci 296(2):655–668, 2006) and show that his main equation, which models the arc menisci configuration under primary drainage in capillary tube cross sections, can be solved analytically for the special case of a convex cross section and the wetting angle being assumed 0. Our approach relies on the Voronoi diagram of the cross section and runs in O(n log n) time for an n-segment cross section. It requires only the solution of n − 2 second-degree polynomial equations.

Contact Angle Effects on Pore and Corner Arc Menisci in Polygonal Capillary Tubes Studied with the Pseudopotential Multiphase Lattice Boltzmann Model
In porous media, pore geometry and wettability are determinant factors for capillary flow in drainage or imbibition. Pores are often considered as cylindrical tubes in analytical or computational studies. Such simplification prevents the capture of phenomena occurring in pore corners. Considering the corners of pores is crucial to realistically study capillary flow and to accurately estimate li...
متن کاملCharacterization of Liquid Bridge in Gas/Oil Gravity Drainage in Fractured Reservoirs
Gravity drainage is the main mechanism which controls the oil recovery from fractured reservoirs in both gas-cap drive and gas injection processes. The liquid bridge formed between two adjacent matrix blocks is responsible for capillary continuity phenomenon. The accurate determination of gas-liquid interface profile of liquid bridge is crucial to predict fracture capillary pressure precisely. ...
متن کاملComparison of Heat Transfer Power of the Cooling Panel with Square Cross Section and Circular Cross Section in Electric Arc Furnaces Steelmaking by the use of Computational Fluid Dynamics
Steel pipes with circular cross-sections are usually used in cooling panels of electric arc furnaces. In the present study pipes with square cross-sections under equivalent conditions were used to obtain more information on the possibility of increasing the heat transfer and cooling efficiency. The results showed increased efficiency of the square pipe compared to the circular cross-section pip...
متن کاملThree-phase capillary entry conditions in pores of noncircular cross-section.
In this work we challenge the assumption that the capillary entry pressures for displacements in three-phase flow are the same as those in two-phase flow. Using an energy balance, as derived by R.P. Mayer and R.A. Stowe (J. Colloid Interface Sci. 20 (1965) 893-911) and H.M. Princen (J. Colloid Interface Sci. 30 (1969) 69-75; 30 (1969) 359-371; 34 (1970) 171-184) for two-phase flow, we derive a ...
متن کاملExperimental investigation of dynamic contact angle and capillary rise in tubes with circular and noncircular cross sections.
An extensive experimental study of the kinetics of capillary rise in borosilicate glass tubes of different sizes and cross-sectional shapes using various fluid systems and tube tilt angles is presented. The investigation is focused on the direct measurement of dynamic contact angle and its variation with the velocity of the moving meniscus (or capillary number) in capillary rise experiments. We...
